I study service operations problems with a focus on healthcare systems. I use analytical tools to build theoretical models, as well as empirical methods to study operational problems using real-world healthcare data.
My main line of work studies dual practice, where a physician works in the public and private sectors simultaneously. I model physician-patient interactions in these settings to understand how patients respond to the physician's pricing and capacity allocation decisions, and how the physician makes these decisions in anticipation of patient behavior. I examine the level of access to care that emerges in equilibrium and the extent to which the composition of patients who receive treatment reflects the composition of patients seeking care. I then study how external regulations change these equilibrium outcomes and whether they can improve patient access and other patient outcomes.
In my empirical stream of research, I use ICU hospital data to identify patients who are likely to experience prolonged ICU stays. Rather than relying only on information available at admission, I dynamically update these predictions as new information becomes available throughout the patient's stay. Earlier identification of these patients can help hospitals adjust bed and staffing plans, as well as scheduling decisions. It can also help clinicians anticipate and plan for a potentially longer course of care.
